The Core Quadrant: The tool to understand your inner tensions
Sometimes, our greatest qualities become our worst flaws. The Core Quadrant is a brilliant psychological model to understand where your frictions with others come from.
What is the Core Quadrant?
Developed by Dutch consultant Daniel Ofman, the Core Quadrant is very often used alongside the Enneagram. It is based on a simple principle: every individual possesses a core quality (an innate gift), but too much of this quality turns into a pitfall.
Understanding the mechanics of this quadrant allows you to identify why you are "allergic" to certain people's behavior, and how these same people actually possess the quality (the challenge) you lack to find balance.
The 4 poles of the Quadrant
The quadrant is built around a logical sequence in 4 steps. Here is an example with a person whose primary quality is "Determination":
1. The Core Quality
This is your natural strength. What others spontaneously appreciate about you.
Ex: Determination, Decisiveness.
2. The Pitfall (The Excess)
This is your quality pushed to the extreme under stress. Your gift becomes an unbearable flaw for those around you.
Ex: Too much determination becomes Pushiness (Bossiness).
4. The Allergy
This is your challenge pushed to its maximum, at the same time as the negative opposite of your core quality. It's the behavior in others that exasperates you the most.
Ex: Extreme patience becomes Passivity (Sluggishness).
3. The Challenge
It represents the positive opposite of your pitfall. It is the quality you need to rebalance your primary strength.
Ex: The positive opposite of pushiness is Patience.
The revelation: The people who irritate you the most (your Allergy) are often the ones who naturally possess the quality (your Challenge) you need most to grow!
